In Islam, charity is not just generosity — it is a command from Allah ﷻ and a means of spiritual purification. Wealth is a trust from Allah, and believers are encouraged to share it with those who are less fortunate.
Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)
Zakat’s one of the five pillars of Islam, a mandatory charitable contribution 💡. Typically 2.5% of excess wealth, it’s meant for the needy and to purify one’s wealth.
Let’s break it down:
– Who’s eligible: Muslims with excess wealth (cash, gold, investments, etc.) above the nisab threshold (around ₹6.4 lakh for 2024-25 in India).
– How to calculate: 2.5% of eligible assets (like savings, investments, gold above needs).
– What it covers: For the poor, debt relief, zakat administrators, etc.
– When: Any time, but Ramadan’s considered extra rewarding 🌙.
– Where to give: Direct to needy or via trusted orgs ensuring transparency.
Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity given for the sake of Allah. Unlike Zakat, it is not obligatory and has no fixed amount. Any Muslim can give Sadaqah at any time, regardless of their wealth.
Sadaqah can be given to support the poor, the needy, education, healthcare, community welfare, or any righteous cause. Even a small contribution is valuable in the sight of Allah.
Giving Sadaqah purifies the heart, increases blessings, and protects from difficulties. It can be given at any time of the year, and the rewards are especially great during the holy month of Ramadan.
Sadaqah Jariyah means ongoing or continuous charity — a form of giving that continues to benefit people even after it is given. The rewards of Sadaqah Jariyah continue to reach the donor long after the act is done, even after death.
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person passes away, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Sahih Muslim)
